Hemostatic Benefits
The StatGuard® Hemostatic Patch is comprised of non-woven fibers made from chitosan that helps to control bleeding. Because it works outside the clotting cascade, the hemostatic properties of chitosan enhance the ability to control bleeding even in the presence of anticoagulation drugs. Chitosan does not directly activate the clotting cascade. The ionic attraction between positively charged molecules in chitosan and negatively charged red blood cell membranes and other solid blood components draws them together. The negatively charged red blood cells cluster in the area close to the positively charged chitosan, helping to form a clot at the point of contact.
Antibacterial Effectiveness
The StatGuard Hemostatic Patch provides a barrier to bacterial penetration through the patch and has antibacterial properties that reduce bacterial growth within each patch. Testing demonstrated a 4 log (99.99%) reduction of bacteria within the patch.
